Highlander of the Bohemian Forest 2024

The aim of the challenge is to visit 20 selected peaks of the Bohemian Forest during 2024. A special selection of peaks has been prepared for you by Horobraník Peschlik.

"Welcome to the Bohemian-Bavarian border region, the Bohemian Forest - a region with a turbulent history that has suffered several significant blows of fate. It is the region of the Chods, who guarded the land border, but also of the glassmakers, woodcutters and charcoal burners who burned charcoal in the local forests.

The most serious fatal blow was the expulsion of the local German population after the defeat of World War II (only the vicinity of Domažlice was ethnically Czech) and the establishment of a forbidden border zone. It was here that the dividing line between the East and the West, the so-called "Iron Curtain" - a solid barrier of socialism and peace - was drawn.

These facts have shaped the landscape here. Most of the settlements have been razed to the ground or adapted to the needs of the CSLA and the Border Guards. The areas of the villages were mostly forested, so that today only an experienced eye can recognise where people used to live. And it is to these places that my challenge will take you.

The activities of the aforementioned national defence forces created high-quality paths in the local forests, which led along signal walls that were designed to detect intruders and prevent them from crossing the border, the so-called "behind the hills". I highly recommend these roads to all fans of riding in the saddle of a bicycle.

I have tried to cover the entire Bohemian Forest massif as much as possible. Not always the top hills, because in some cases they would be too close to each other, but also the peaks, in the vicinity of which there is something interesting, for example, from history or a nearby lookout tower or an admirable rock formation rising from the ground.
