Bavarian Mountaineer

We present one of the most beautiful hikes in the Bavarian Forest (DE), known as the Kaitersberg Arber Hochtour, complete with three peaks within sight of the main road. A strenuous trail (1500 m elevation gain) with spectacular views awaits you as you cross a 28 km ridge with 15 thousand peaks (14 peaks over 1000 m and one peak with 999 m). Be sure to wear sturdy shoes for the route.

The route is doable all year round without restrictions, you can go both ways and there is parking at each end. Both car parks are pay and display, but the Reitenberg (2 euros) and Arbersee (4 euros) are reasonably priced. So it's ideal to set off in two cars, leaving one at the end and the other at the start. It is also possible to get here by bus from the Czech Republic, you can find a link to the timetables below.

If you start in Reitenberg, the route will take you from the Weißen Regen valley to the Kaitersberg, where you will sweat a lot, as it is a 580m climb to the top of Kreuzfelsen. On the way along the ridge you will enjoy magnificent views on both sides. The route takes you through forest or meadows, mostly on pleasant paths. Along the way you will meet many peaks with summit crosses.

You can refresh yourself at the Kötztinger Hütte, which is open all year round, at the top of Mittagsstein or further down into the valley of the village of Eck at the Berggasthof Eck. At the Little Maple (Kleiner Arber) is the Chamer Hütte and just before the finish line, the last mountain hut, the Arberschutzhaus, awaits you at the Big Maple. You can recognize the Big Maple from afar, thanks to the large military radars. By then you'll know that you're only 3.5 km through the forest over the Stallriegel (1228 m) and you're down in the parking lot, so don't be afraid to get a treat.

And if you don't want to do it in one go, you can split the route. You can spend the night in Eck or Schareben (both with bus stops).
