Description
We’re bringing you the long-awaited challenge that will thrill all adventurers and lovers of wild and beautiful landscapes. We’ve been working on this challenge with Hloust for over a year, having long phone conversations, and have finally arrived at the final version.
The aim of the challenge is to offer you a quality selection of peaks that are well worth visiting. We have included peaks of varying difficulty levels in the selection, so that both those exploring Iceland for the first time and experienced hikers looking to conquer technically demanding peaks will find something to suit them. For beginners, we highly recommend choosing peaks from the easy difficulty category (green section). Seasoned hikers can choose from the group of more challenging peaks, but you must always bear in mind that the weather can make the climb even more demanding. To complete the challenge, you need to visit at least 5 peaks of your choice, thereby achieving the first level, Tourist. The second level, Traveller, is for 10 peaks, and the third level, Adventurer, is for visiting 15 peaks. The challenge has no time limit.
A few words about Iceland
Iceland, an island born of fire and ice, fascinates with its rugged and untamed landscape, where volcanic activity meets glacial majesty. Endless lava fields, volcanic craters, geysers, glaciers and black sand beaches create a scene that seems almost otherworldly. Iceland is a paradise for lovers of nature, tranquillity and raw beauty – it offers countless hiking trails and treks across uninhabited inland areas. Among the best known are the Laugavegur trek, linking the colourful mountains of Landmannalaugar with the green valley of Þórsmörk, and the Skaftafell area beneath Iceland’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. Here, the landscape is not merely a backdrop, but a living element that shapes the way of life and the locals’ relationship with nature. You can find more detailed information about Iceland and Icelandic trails here: www.visiticeland.com, www.fi.is, www.alltrails.com/iceland.
Remember that safety always comes first and you must always be able to adapt to the vagaries of the local weather. The best months to visit are June, July and August. All the selected peaks, although some are located within a national park or nature reserve, are fully accessible and have paths leading to them; Icelanders regularly climb them and, provided they follow safe climbing practices and show consideration, do not breach any nature conservation rules, etc., so they can be visited without penalty.
About the author of the peak selection
For Hlousta, whose real name is Mariana Lechnýř, Iceland has been close to his heart ever since his first visit, which took place more than a quarter of a century ago. Ever since his university days, when he studied geology, he has been deeply fascinated by mineralogy. Iceland’s frequent volcanic activity therefore holds a magical attraction for him whenever it occurs. He loves returning to Iceland whenever he can, often several times a year – camera in hand. Over the course of more than 35 visits, he has come to know the island’s beauty from virtually every angle, and according to his Icelandic friends, he knows some places better than they do themselves. In his own words, Iceland has captivated him above all with its raw, picturesque landscape, its wildness and ruggedness, its photogenic qualities, as well as its genius loci and the challenges of conquering its many magnificent peaks.
Marian is an active member and a member of the board of the Club of Icelandic Fanatics (KIF), which organises club meetings and lectures, actively participates in Nordic events and organises them itself, and invites cultural figures from this similarly small Nordic country to the Czech Republic. He is very keen to share his experiences through photographic exhibitions or short talks.
A word from Hloust
Please accept a warm invitation to Iceland, an island of many contrasts... a country offering such diversity and opportunities to discover landscapes that are often utterly pristine yet breathtaking, changing literally before your eyes, beneath your feet or wheels every few kilometres as you explore it. It could be said that it concentrates within itself as much diversity as would otherwise span almost an entire continent. In one moment it is vibrantly colourful, in another lushly green, in many places harshly barren or even desert-like, elsewhere mountainous, with plenty of magnificent jagged peaks, numerous glaciers, lakes, rivers with majestic waterfalls, and thermal areas in places you could scarcely imagine even with the wildest imagination. A country that is very distinctive, much like its inhabitants. Perhaps you too will fall in love with Iceland to such an extent that you’ll be happy to return here, discovering more places full of personal resonance and enjoying the intimacy and ruggedness it offers, whilst ticking off further peaks from the more challenging categories of this challenge.
This challenge, with its various difficulty categories, offers the chance to discover a slightly different, unusual perspective on Iceland through some well-known as well as lesser-known mountain peaks in different parts of the island. From many of them, in good weather, the panoramic and distant views are so breathtakingly beautiful that they seem almost unreal. In particular, the peaks in the higher difficulty category are intended for more demanding mountaineers and connoisseurs, for whom the adventure of the journey to the summit is just as important as the breathtaking views that take one’s breath away, whilst at the same time this elemental essence nourishes and fulfils them. The most demanding category of challenge is the imaginary ‘five cherries on the cake’ of Iceland’s peaks, the selection of which reflects the difficulty of conquering them. And believe me, the number of days in the year when it is possible to visit them is, mainly due to the variability of the weather, as few as the fingers on one hand.
So let yourself be carried away by these beautiful images of the peaks and immerse yourself in the planning.
