🇪🇭 Western Sahara

Western Sahara

Western Sahara is a predominantly desert region stretching along the Atlantic coast between Morocco and Mauritania. The landscape consists of vast gravelly-sandy plains, rocky hammadas and shifting dunes, from which only occasional low hills and rocky massifs rise in the southern and north-eastern parts of the territory. The highest point, an unnamed elevation east of the town of Awsard, reaches a mere 701 metres, whilst the Sebkhet Tah depression in the north-west drops as much as 55 metres below sea level. The harsh climate, with extreme temperature fluctuations, dry sirocco winds and the ever-present harmattan, lends the landscape a raw, minimalist beauty. This is not a classic mountain destination – the challenge here lies in traversing vast desert distances and seeking out solitary peaks amidst the unspoilt Sahel-Saharan wilderness.
