Nepal lies at the heart of the Himalaya, rising over less than two hundred kilometres from the Terai lowlands in the south, only about 60 metres above sea level, to the highest mountain on Earth. Eight of the fourteen eight-thousanders stand on its territory – Mount Everest (Sagarmatha, 8,849 m), Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Annapurna. Famous treks lead to their feet: to Everest Base Camp, around Annapurna or through the Langtang valley, past Sherpa villages and Buddhist monasteries. Sagarmatha National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The higher mountains call for good acclimatisation and often a permit.
