The British Indian Ocean Territory is the Chagos Archipelago – more than fifty low coral islands in atolls in the middle of the Indian Ocean, including the Great Chagos Bank, the largest atoll structure in the world. The largest island, Diego Garcia, is a military base, the surrounding waters are a marine protected area, and the islands may only be visited with a special permit. The highest point you can reach is Diego Garcia High Point, an embankment about seven metres high on the base; the natural dunes on the ocean side of the island rise to around nine metres. Mauritius claims the archipelago, and its future is under negotiation.
